Introduction

Pawna Lake is an artificial lake brought into existence due to the Pawna dam (Pavana dam).  Pawna dam is on the Pawna river in Maval taluka, around 40 km from the borders of Pimpri Chinchwad city. Its capacity is almost 10 TMC. The construction of this dam began in 1963 and ended in 1972, and is 1,329 m (4,360 ft) long and 42.37 m (139.0 ft) high, having a gross storage capacity of 0.24 km (0.058 cu mi).

Geography of the Pawna Lake

Pawna Lake camping is located in the Western Ghats making it a natural hot spot for flora and fauna. Pawna dam is operated by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. The main purpose behind the construction of the Pawna dam is a hydroelectric power generation and water supply. Pawna hydroelectric project and Multipurpose Project are built on this dam with a power generation capacity of 1250 MW.

How to reach?

Pawna Lake is near the happening destination of Lonavala making it easily accessible from there. This place is just around 20 kilometers away from the Lonavala Railway Station. The easiest way to travel here would be to hire a taxi or a cab from Lonavala. 

There is good road connectivity from Lonavala, Pune, and Mumbai to Pawna Lake. The nearby town of Kamshet, off the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, too offers a lot of transport facilities to the lake which is only 35 kilometers away. The nearest railway line is in Lonavala, and the train route is pretty picturesque as approaches Lonavala.

Tourism 

Areas surrounding Pawna Dam and Pawna Dam Reservoir have seen a rapid rise in tourism in recent years due to the water body’s proximity to Lonavala hill station and forts such as Tikona, Lohagad, and Tung. Various camping-site businesses have begun around the Pawna Dam Lake. Agro-tourism here has also flourished. Pawna Lake attracts many visitors mainly from the two major neighboring cities of Pune and Mumbai. Almost 4,000 people from these two cities visit the lake every weekend.

Things To Do 

 Adventures in Dudhiware Waterfall

Dudhiware waterfall is a seasonal monsoon waterfall and is located near Lonavala,  at Dudhiware village. This 2-tier waterfall falls at an altitude of about approx 135 feet from a rock structure. One can enjoy the beauty of Dudhiware waterfall and also the thrill of water rappelling, valley crossing zip lining, etc.

Camping at Pawna lake

This is one of the quick weekend getaways in Maharashtra and is considered one of the best camping near Pune and Mumbai. Camping is one such experience where our soul gets rejuvenated and relaxed betwixt the beautiful nature open in all seasons and for people of all age groups. Trek up to the Lohagad or Visapur

Lonavala or say Mawal is a treasure of beautiful forts and mountains. Lohagad fort and Visapur fort are also situated in Lonavala. the fort is one of the best forts to visit at any time of the year. The Lohagad fort is connected to Visapur fort which is also a good trekking place if one has the time to cover both forts in one day. Visapur fort is higher and larger than its twin fort Lohagad. These are very easy treks and even a beginner trekker should not have any problems.  

Tikona Fort Trek

Tikona is also known as Vitandgad and is the dominant hill fort in Mawal. This 3500 ft high hill is pyramidal in shape and the name Tikona means ‘Triangular’. The fort is a trekking destination noted for its large doors, the temple of ‘Trimbakeshwar Mahadev’, seven water tanks, and Satvahan caves. There is a temple inside the cave which is the main attraction of the fort along with a water cistern. The entry to the entrance of the fort is a bit steep with curved stairs. One can get scenic views of the Pawna Dam and the forts at Visapur, Tung, and Lohagad. 

 Kayaking in Pawna lake

Everyone should experience kayaking at Pawna lake as it is so peaceful, yet one is right there in nature. However, taking up kayaking can have more long-term benefits to our physical and mental well-being than we realize.
